Relationships between mycorrhizal fungi and plant biodiversity, the soil microbiome, and ecosystem functioning.

My research is focusing on understanding how soil fungi drive forest ecosystems through their roles in important soil processes including organic matter decomposition and nutrient turnover, as well as carbon sequestration. Much of his research has concentrated on ectomycorrhizal fungi, which form symbiotic associations with the roots of forest trees. I'm developing large-scale genomics and environmental genomics for investigating the function and role of this highly significant class of soil microorganisms.

I study the belowground interactions between plants, microbes and their environment. My research group addresses both basic and applied questions to the restoration and management of terrestrial ecosystems. My research interests are about the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in peat forests, mangrove forests, tropical forests in West Kalimantan. Apart from that, I also researched the physiology of heavy metal stress (especially mercury) in mycorrhizal plants as a basis for phytoremediation of mercury-contaminated land. Most gold mining in West Kalimantan uses mercury in the gold amalgamation process. This causes the land around the gold mining area to be contaminated with mercury. Phytoremediation efforts can be supported with mycorrhizal plants.

My research interest is in free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes but I also work on other groups of soil organisms.

My main interest is nutrient cycling and drivers in aboveground-belowground communities including mycorrhiza, and what this means for ecosystem functioning and global change. Recent work tests how major drivers in grasslands and savanna (climate, herbivory, fire, woody plant encroachment) affect primary productivity as well as nutrient cycling, soil microbial and faunal diversity, and carbon sinks.

Understanding the role of fungi and other cryptic organisms on ecosystem functioning.

We look at how to use genetic variation of mycorrhizal fungi to improve growth of tropical crops and improve soil structure and carbon sequestration. We also study effects of AMF inoculation on AMF community structure and the interaction with the soil microbiome.

My research lab focuses on the evolution of microbial eukaryotes, specifically the fungal-like oomycetes. We use a combination of field collection, lab isolation, and molecular characterization to describe new species, explore species distributions, and dissect genomic features associated with hybridization and pathogenicity.

Current projects in my lab include: (1) examining how symbiotic interactions between plants and mycorrhizal fungi shape above and belowground communities in response to, and recovery from, disturbance events; (2) determining how microbiomes can be tailored to improve plant productivity in natural and agroecosystems; and (3) investigating the role of microbial inoculations in the success or failure of native plant establishment in ecological restorations.
